What is this learning path about, and why is it important?
Today, enterprises and organizations of all sizes and types are either making the transition to the cloud or are in the process of evaluating or planning a transition. Since the inception of cloud-based services, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been a leader in defining and developing this important and dynamic phase of IT evolution, and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) has been among the most popular choices of IT professionals.
In this learning path, expert author Steve Suehring shows you how the components of EC2 interact, and teaches you how to deploy a Linux or Windows instance. This learning path is designed for those who already have experience working with a Linux or Windows server, but who are new to the AWS platform.
You begin by learning how to deploy an EC2 Linux instance (including how to create a key pair and a basic instance), allow network access, add a new disk, and move files. From there, Steve teaches you how to use Windows in EC2. This learning path also covers topics such as monitoring and reporting, security, using Amazon Linux, and creating Amazon Machine Images (AMIs). Finally, you will learn how to work with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) and EC2, as well as create applications on EC2 instances.
What you’ll learn—and how you can apply it
How to build and deploy an EC2 virtual machine instances in both Linux and Windows
Connecting to EC2 instances
Integrating EC2 with RDS
Learn to program network systems written in Java
Learn to program backend web applications written in Java
How to integrate Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) classes with relational databases
This learning path is for you because…
You are a system engineer, developer, or architect whose company or organization is considering deploying applications in the cloud and on AWS
You are an experienced application developer who is unfamiliar with the AWS platform and want to learn more about it, specifically EC2 and its components
You work in Linux and Windows environments and need to understand how to build and deploy EC2 instances of applications native to both platforms
Prerequisites
You should should be familiar with basic network, application development, and deployment concepts
