With his six-string jazz-bass, eccentric fashion, soulful falsetto, and humour, Thundercat (né Stephen Lee Bruner) oozes personality as one of the most unique artists to come to fame in the 21st century. His latest LP, Distracted, which boasts 15 new tracks and a handful of A-list features, comes six years to the day after his previous album. In that time, Thundercat has continued to quietly skyrocket towards legendary bassist stature (alongside Flea, Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius) with collaborations with marquee names like A$AP Rocky and Justice.

Opener "Candlelight" showcases Thundercat's bass and jazz mastery. Fans of his viral lick from Mac Miller's Tiny Desk Concert need not look any further than this (and "A.D.D. Through the Roof") to find new moments to savor. Other album highlights include the lead single "I Did This To Myself," which features Lil Yachty's deep voice in contrast to Thundercat's falsetto, and also the laid-back "This Thing We Call Love," on which Channel Tres guests. However, it's "She Knows Too Much" with a posthumous Mac Miller feature that steals the spotlight. Although these kinds of releases are often controversial, diehard Miller fans will trust his voice in the hands of his close friend and longtime collaborator. It also helps that the tune is excellent. Driven by a Stevie Wonder "I Wish"-esque bassline grooving throughout, "She Knows Too Much" is yet another sad reminder of how much potential the Pittsburgh artist had, but also of how Thundercat always brought out his best.

Distracted is a playful fifth album that doesn't reinvent the bassist's sound but continues to refine the cosmic jazz that he has spent a decade perfecting. Producer Greg Kurstin's expertise can be heard throughout the extraterrestrial record's warm analogue feel. An album that deserves to be more than just a distraction.
