There are not many artists who can be said to define a genre. Emerson Lake & Palmer are one of those few. Though not the first to play progressive rock, they became the genre’s first supergroup and went on to have an incredibly prolific career. With Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake on bass and vocals and Carl Palmer on drums, ELP broadened the audience for progressive rock.
This was recorded at the peak of ELP’s popularity and I have owned several copies of this over the years. The kings of symphonic rock were riding a wave during the Brain Salad Surgery Tour and this was originally released as a 3 album set that was panned by critics as being pompous for its gatefold cover that opened to show their initals that were as large as the albums themselves.
A great album for a fan of ELP, I would not buy it first if I was trying to discover the band. I would start with Brain Salad Surgery. The studio versions are just a touch better than the what is on “Welcome Back…”.
