Jerome Bixby has published over four hundred stories and written eight teleplays and motion-pictures. One of his stories, IT’S A GOOD LIFE (published in the Ballantine STAR series) has been called by critics “the most terrifying modern fantasy.”

But Mr. Bixby is not always terrifying. He possesses a happy turn of ribald humor, converting traditional figures of horror into amusing and even charming people whom it is a pleasure to know. His stories are also gentle, quixotic, satirical, poignant, prophetic; indeed, he displays an empathy for the gamut of human foibles—the mark of a good writer.
